Motivational Sports Video
Mel’s Burger Bar – New York, NY
The dog days of summer mean a few things. It means hotdogs and barbecues. It means sprinklers and the ice cream truck jingle. And it means baseball. In this case softball. Hundreds of New Yorkers take part each summer in city softball leagues as a way to get outside and enjoy the open grasslands of metropolis. Mel’s Burger Bar (on 110th and Broadway) sponsors such a team, and it has been generating lots of excitement of late. So we embarked on a pet project in the form of a motivational sports video.
The first step was to capture the look and feel of the establishment itself in a team logo that would compliment their existing brand. The restaurant has a somewhat retro-diner feel and their brand matches their physical complexion. In keeping with the blackboards they have in the restaurant, their brand is done with a chalkboard finish. Therefore the new logo imitated this complexion, while simultaneously mimicking the look of a softball. And lastly the team’s name arched around the design.
For the video, the concentration centered on an ‘ESPN Featured’ motif. Rummaging through countless of the necessary clips was the most challenging part of the project. After the appropriate segments were collected, Photoshop in conjunction with AfterEffects was used to alter the different program screens. This allowed for seamless transition from clip-to-clip. The last part of the process was inserting the audio portions into the tail-end of the video. Since it was released around July 4th, the epic presidential Independence Day speech was chosen as a feature voiceover.
Thanks to ESPN for the clips, 20th Century Fox for the Independence Day and Sandlot audio, Warner Brothers for The Dark Knight voiceover, and Columbia Pictures for the rant from A League of Their Own. And invaluable special credit goes to the genius minds at Audiomachine for their tremendous score, “Beyond Good and Evil”.
